County Matters

Councillor Bill Wearing

Cumbria County Council's Apprenticeship Team has been hosting events in the County last month.

During March the County Council has been recruiting for apprenticeship opportunities across a range of service areas including engineering, fire and rescue, social care, project management and many more.

The council is committed to apprenticeships and is making a big effort to develop our offer, over the next year we will be recruiting well over 100 apprenticeship roles.

As part of the national advertising campaign, Cumbria Fire & Rescue Service is encouraging people in Cumbria to test the smoke alarms in their home and those of vulnerable friends/relatives, and if not yet done, purchase and install smoke alarms at every level of the home.

Smoke alarms can give someone the few extra seconds they need to escape in a fire. While the majority of homes across the county now have an alarm fitted, most people are not aware that the average alarm has a lifespan of just ten years and then needs replacing.

A single smoke alarm may simply not be enough. The recommendation is at least one at every level,  to ensure you can hear them throughout your home, particularly when asleep.  Last year, in nearly half of all fires in the home where the smoke alarm did not give a warning the reason was that the alarm was not positioned correctly.  Missing or flat batteries were another major cause.

If you are not sure you have the correct smoke alarm or need help and assistance please contact Cumbria fire and rescue at www.cumbriafire.gov.uk

Cumbria County Council are upgrading their Digital Strategy so that it is easier to contact the County via our website at www.cumbria.gov.uk if you are not able to access a computer at home then Grange Library has computers you can use free of charge to access County Council services.

Kindest regards

Bill Wearing Conservative County Councillor Grange Division
