South Lakes council leader asked to provide update on ‘free Kendal car park’ promise

The leader of South Lakeland District Council is being asked to provide an update on a commitment made by the local authority to provide a free car park in Kendal after the controversial closure to cars of land at New Road.

In September 2017 council leader Cllr Giles Archibald pledged the council to the creation of a free car park in the town for at least 200 vehicles – a commitment the council leader reaffirmed this July.

Councillor Tom Harvey, the deputy leader of the Conservative group on the South Lakes local authority, has now written to Cllr Archibald, asking for an update.

Councillor Tom Harvey said: “The council’s decision to close New Road to cars was highly controversial and aroused a lot of local anger. The promise made by the council leader at the time to create a free car park recognised the strength of feeling and the need to replace lost parking in the town.”

His call is being supported by councillor James Airey, the Conservative parliamentary candidate for Westmorland and Lonsdale. He said: “As we near the one-year anniversary of the New Road closure, I know lots of people are looking to the council to make good on its promise to create a free car park in the town and want to know what progress the council has made over the last twelve months.”
